When Someone Calls About Your Mortgage
Last week, I received this email from a past client:
“I’m getting calls from someone claiming to be the underwriter on my loan. They say there are document issues with my loan, even though it closed months ago. Should I be worried?”
I knew the answer immediately. But I also realized this is something every homeowner should know.
Because if one homeowner can receive a call like this, others can too.
The good news? There wasn’t an issue with his loan.
During or after the mortgage process, borrowers typically don’t communicate directly with the underwriter. If there were ever a legitimate issue after closing, the communication would usually come from your loan officer, your loan servicer, or another verified representative—not someone unexpectedly claiming to be the underwriter.
Why does this happen?
Once you purchase a home, some information about your mortgage becomes part of the public record.
That means you may start receiving phone calls, emails, and letters from companies you’ve never heard of.
Some are legitimate marketing. Some are misleading. And unfortunately, some are scams.
You may receive:
- Home warranty offers
- Mortgage protection plans
- Refinance solicitations
- Requests for deed copies
- Or even calls from people claiming to represent your lender
So what should you do?
If you receive an unexpected call about your mortgage:
- Never feel pressured to act immediately.
- Don’t share personal or financial information until you’ve verified who you’re speaking with.
- If someone claims to represent your lender or loan servicer, hang up and call the number on your monthly mortgage statement.
- And if something doesn’t feel right, call me first.
Bottom Line
Buying a home doesn’t end at closing—and neither does my commitment to you.
Whether it’s an unexpected phone call, an official-looking letter, or an email that raises questions, I’d much rather you spend two minutes calling me than two days worrying about it.
If I don’t know the answer, I’ll help you find it.
Even if it’s just a quick question. No pressure. Just clarity.
