Back to School… and a Lesson We Often Forget
Over the next couple of weeks, many of us will be sending our kids—or grandkids—back to school. Some will be walking a nervous kindergartener into school for the very first time. Some will be watching their middle or high schoolers become a little more independent. And some will be helping a child pack the car and head off to college. It all seems to happen so quickly…..
Alok and I have been reliving many of those milestones through our grandchildren. Watching them grow is a wonderful reminder of just how quickly childhood flies by. As parents, we spend years teaching our children how to read, write, ride a bike, drive a car, and hopefully become kind, responsible adults.
But there’s one life skill that often doesn’t get talked about enough…
How to Build Good Credit
Not because a credit score is the most important thing in life. But because good credit quietly opens doors. It can help when renting an apartment, buying a car, qualifying for lower insurance premiums, and eventually purchasing a first home. One of the things I hear from many first-time homebuyers is, “I wish someone had explained credit to me years ago.” Unfortunately, most young adults don’t think much about credit until they need it. By then, they’re starting from scratch—or worse, trying to recover from a few early mistakes.
A Few Simple Ways to Help
As your children get older, consider teaching them how credit works.
- Talk about paying bills on time.
- Explain why carrying a balance isn’t the same as building credit.
- Help them understand that a credit card is a financial tool—not extra income.
- And when they’re ready, consider adding them as an authorized user on one of your well-managed credit cards, if it makes sense for your family. It can be a simple way to help them begin establishing credit history while you continue to oversee the account.
Small lessons today can make a big difference years from now.
Bottom Line
One day, today’s kindergartener may be applying for their first apartment. Today’s college freshman may be buying their first home. Those milestones arrive much sooner than we expect. We can’t slow down how quickly our children grow up. But we can prepare them for the opportunities—and responsibilities—that come with adulthood. Sometimes the greatest financial gift we can give them isn’t money. It’s the knowledge and habits that will serve them for the rest of their lives.
